Model of the World
L2.1 Explanatory ModelsThe client's internal map of reality
What
A person's Model of the World is the totality of their beliefs, values, rules, metaphors and perceptual filters — the internal map they use to navigate reality. People never respond to the world itself, only to their map of it. Two clients in identical situations can live in completely different realities.
What for
Tells the coach how the client navigates and where the map distorts reality.
How it's used
Early in a session the coach works to understand the client's map from the inside: how does this person decide what things mean, what is dangerous, what is possible? Problems are then located as distortions in the map, not defects in the person. When defining the change, the coach makes sure the new pattern fits the client's map — or deliberately updates the part of the map that produced the problem. The guiding question: 'How would the world have to look for this behaviour to make perfect sense?'
Content
Beliefs, values, rules, metaphors and filters as one integrated map The map, not the territory, drives emotion and behaviour Diagnosis: find where the map distorts reality and creates the problem Change work: align the new pattern with the map, or update the map itself
