The three Ps that keep people stuck

What

Martin Seligman's research model of learned helplessness, used inside the TR system as a diagnostic lens. Chronic stuckness rests on three belief patterns — Permanence ('it will never change'), Pervasiveness ('it ruins everything'), and Personalization ('I am the problem'). The more of the three Ps are active, the more helpless the person feels.

What for

Diagnoses the belief structure behind chronic stuckness.

How it's used

The coach listens for the three Ps in the client's language. 'I always mess this up' signals permanence and personalization; 'my whole life is falling apart' signals pervasiveness. Each detected P becomes a target: the coach challenges the generalization with counter-evidence, reframes the scope ('this one area, this one period'), and separates behaviour from identity. Dissolving even one P measurably restores the sense of agency.

Content

Permanence — the belief the problem will never change Pervasiveness — the belief it contaminates every area of life Personalization — the belief 'I am the problem' Diagnostic use: detect the three Ps in the client's language, then dismantle them one by one
