Spiritual Needs: Growth & Contribution
L2.1 Explanatory ModelsThe two needs that make change permanent
What
Growth and Contribution are the two 'needs of the spirit' within the 6 Human Needs model. Unlike the four personality needs (Certainty, Variety, Significance, Connection), which can be met in destructive ways, Growth and Contribution can only be met in ways that expand the person — which is why fulfilment lives here.
What for
When a new pattern ties to these, it becomes self-sustaining.
How it's used
In change work the coach deliberately connects the new pattern to Growth and Contribution: 'who do you become through this change, and who else benefits?' A pattern that only serves comfort or status stays fragile; a pattern tied to growing and giving becomes self-sustaining because it generates meaning every time it runs. This linkage is a standard move when anchoring any breakthrough.
