What
A Global Metaphor is the overarching image or story a person uses to make sense of life as a whole: 'life is a battle', 'life is a test', 'life is a gift', 'I'm always swimming against the current'. Because it frames everything, it colours every individual experience before it happens.
What for
Identifying and replacing it changes all experiences within it.
How it's used
A sub-tool of the Language macro tool. The coach listens for the metaphor in repeated phrasing and imagery — clients state it more often than they realise. Once identified, it is first made conscious ('do you notice you describe everything as a fight?'), then interrupted, then replaced with an empowering metaphor the client chooses and elaborates. Because one metaphor frames thousands of experiences, exchanging it is one of the highest-leverage language interventions available.
