Identity Questions
L5 Micro-InterventionsFrom trying harder to becoming someone
What
Questions that lift a change from the level of behaviour to the level of identity: 'Who do you need to become for this to be inevitable? Is this behaviour who you are — or just who you've been? What would the person you're becoming do right now?'
What for
Make change a matter of identity, not effort.
How it's used
Used when behaviour-level change keeps relapsing. People act consistently with who they believe they are, so the coach reframes the goal as an identity: not 'I'm trying to quit' but 'I'm not a smoker'. Identity questions invite the client to author that self-definition themselves, which makes the new behaviour an expression of self rather than an act of discipline. Central to making any breakthrough permanent.
Content
People act consistently with their self-definition Core question: 'who do you need to become?' Shift: behaviour change ('I'm trying to…') → identity change ('I am…') Used to consolidate breakthroughs into lasting self-concept
