Positive Intent
L5 Micro-InterventionsEvery behaviour is trying to do something good
What
The working principle that every behaviour — including destructive behaviour — carries a positive intent at some level: protection, connection, significance, relief. The behaviour may be a disaster; the intent behind it is legitimate. Separating the two is what makes change possible without self-war.
What for
Reduce resistance by honouring the intent.
How it's used
Applied constantly across diagnosis and intervention. The coach finds the intent ('what is this behaviour trying to get you or protect you from?'), honours it explicitly — which drops the client's shame and defence — and then redirects: the intent keeps its job, the behaviour gets replaced by one that does the job better. Fighting the behaviour head-on fails because it attacks the intent along with it; this principle is why.
Content
